Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed her role. But her parents would not permit her to perform until she was an adult due to the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry was shy in high-school and didn't act. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, performing in minor parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as an actress in the theater. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She played the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. Despite her family link to the character she got the role via an audition.
